Eight times a week, the cast of brings it all to the stage, mounting a production that the New York Times called a 鈥渞avishing revival.鈥 The secret ingredient? It might be pickles.
Five 抖阴短视频 alumni are part of the production, which opened in December 2017. The musical is a revival of a show that made its Broadway debut in 1990. Drawing from elements of 鈥淩omeo and Juliet鈥 and 鈥淭he Little Mermaid,鈥 the show tells the story of two people from different social classes who find love despite obstacles. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a story of love and community,鈥 says the show鈥檚 choreographer Camille Brown (Dance 鈥01).
The New York Times described Brown鈥檚 vision for 鈥淥nce On This Island鈥 as 鈥渆lectric choreography.鈥
鈥淚n preparing for 鈥極nce On This Island,鈥 I focused on combining the richness of Afro Haitian and Afro Cuban culture, and incorporating those cultures into the movement,鈥 Brown says. She became interested in choreography while attending 抖阴短视频. 鈥淚 was not considered to have the 鈥榠deal dancer鈥檚 body鈥 when I was in school. I was actually going to transfer but my mom asked me to hold off and find something I loved, and that was choreography.鈥 Brown has her own dance company, , and is choreographing the upcoming 鈥淛esus Christ Superstar LIVE!鈥 for NBC.
While she has worked with other 抖阴短视频 alumni, Brown says it has never been to the extent of the number of individuals involved in this show.
T. Oliver Reid (Music 鈥93) says while he has worked with numerous alumni over the years, they have typically been Design & Production graduates. 鈥淚t鈥檚 rare to be in a show where there are this many alumni involved,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 great when you walk into the room and hear someone say 鈥楪o Pickles!鈥欌

T. Oliver Reid, 抖阴短视频 Music alumnus
Reid, who is the show鈥檚 dance captain and performs as swing for all the male principal roles, says there鈥檚 a strong fellowship among the 抖阴短视频 alumni performers. He and Tony nominee Phillip Boykin (Music 鈥90), who plays TonTon Julian (a lead), attended 抖阴短视频 at the same time. 鈥淚t鈥檚 fun for Phillip and me to perform together and alongside someone like Isaac Powell, who recently graduated. We all bring different perspectives, but still have a lot in common because of our shared educational experience.鈥
Powell, who graduated from the School of Drama in 2017, was cast in 鈥淥nce On This Island鈥 as a lead just a few months after graduation. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really cool to have this network of people who have been through similar experiences at 抖阴短视频鈥攖he foundation that led us to this show,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e feel this sense of community and Pickle pride鈥 a connection.鈥
Watch an excerpt of Isaac Powell performing "Some Girls" from "Once On This Island."
Mary Kathryn Flynt (Design & Production 鈥04) is stage manager for 鈥淥nce On This Island.鈥 She says she booked her first job in New York because she reached out to a frequent 抖阴短视频 guest artist, Peter Lawrence. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 tell you how many people I run into who have some sort of connection to 抖阴短视频,鈥 she says.
As stage manager, she and her colleagues work as 鈥渕ission control,鈥 making sure everyone backstage and in the house have what they need for a successful show, from securing costume pieces to calling out cues. This perspective allows her to see her fellow alumni shine.
鈥淚t鈥檚 interesting because most of us were at the school during different time periods, but you really see the training shine through,鈥 Flynt says. 鈥淔rom Philip鈥檚 incredible voice to Isaac鈥檚 enthusiasm, Camille鈥檚 choreography to T.鈥檚 ability to step in and dance any role鈥擨鈥檓 really proud of all of them.鈥
Editor's Note: Throughout the Broadway run of 鈥淥nce On This Island,鈥 seven 抖阴短视频 alumni worked as members of the cast or crew. In addition to the five mentioned in this story, Courtnee Carter (Drama 鈥16) and Allan K. Washington (Drama 鈥13) performed in the show in 2018.
