抖阴短视频 alumni receive Helen Hayes Awards for theater productions in Washington D.C.
Alumni of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts have won Helen Hayes Awards for two productions in our nation鈥檚 capital. Named for the 鈥渇irst lady of American theater,鈥 the Helen Hayes Awards are Washington, D.C.鈥檚 equivalent of Broadway鈥檚 Tony Awards.
鈥淪till Life with Rocket,鈥 conceived and directed by Mollye Maxner (high school Dance 鈥93 and Drama directing 鈥09) won Outstanding Production of a Play. The play also won Outstanding Choreography for Mollye Maxner and her husband, Kelly Maxner (Dance 鈥94 and Drama 鈥00).
"Still Life with Rocket" has won two Helen Hayes Awards.
鈥淪till Life with Rocket鈥 played last summer at Theater Alliance, where Colin Hovde (Drama 鈥04) is artistic director. It was nominated for eight Helen Hayes Awards.
The Maxners previously won a Helen Hayes Award for choreography in 2016 for 鈥淥ccupied Territories,鈥 which Mollye Maxner wrote and directed for Theater Alliance.
Christopher Annas-Lee (Design and Production 鈥14) won Outstanding Lighting Designer for the U.S. premiere of a Spanish language 鈥淚n the Heights鈥 by Lin-Manuel Miranda, with Gala Hispanic Theatre, where he is resident lighting designer. 鈥淚n the Heights鈥 was sold out in April and May 2017. It was one of two Gala Hispanic Theatre productions for which Annas-Lee was nominated 鈥 鈥淒on Juan Tenorio,鈥 which played in September and October 2017, was the second.
Christopher Annas-Lee has won his second Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lighting Design.
Annas-Lee previously won the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lighting Design in 2016 for Gala鈥檚 鈥淵erma.鈥 He was nominated last year for the Gala production of 鈥淐ervantes: El Ultimo Quijote (the Last Quixote).鈥 In August, he received a prestigious Princess Grace Award for his work with Gala.
Gala Hispanic Theatre鈥檚 鈥淚n the Heights鈥 was the most celebrated production, winning nine Helen Hayes Awards.
Alumni were involved with eight of the 20 productions that were recognized Monday evening, drawn from 202 eligible productions in 2017.
Among them, Mary-Mitchell Campbell (high school Music 鈥92) was musical director for Tina Fey鈥檚 鈥淢ean Girls,鈥 which won Outstanding Visiting Production at the National Theatre. Jessica Weeks (D&P 鈥10) was assistant audio engineer. Both are working on the Broadway production, which is nominated for 12 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
