The University of North Carolina School of the Arts production of American Voices: Two One-Act Plays explores what can happen when an identity doesn鈥檛 fit into the traditional American narrative. From Oct. 18-21, audiences have five opportunities to see this double bill featuring 鈥淎 Movie Star Has to Star in Black and White鈥 by Adrienne Kennedy and 鈥淪uddenly Last Summer鈥 by Tennessee Williams.
Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Hanesbrands Theatre, 209 N. Spruce Street, in downtown Winston-Salem.
Tickets are $20 regular and $15 students with valid ID, and are available online or by calling the box office at 336-721-1945.
This year鈥檚 benefit for the Larry Leon Hamlin and Sylvia Sprinkle Hamlin / Urban League Endowed Scholarship, which supports talented artists of color in 抖阴短视频鈥檚 School of Drama and School of Design and Production, coincides with the second performance of American Voices on Friday, Oct. 19. Tickets for the performance and 6 p.m. reception at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts are $100, and are available through the Advancement Office at 336-770-3332 or dejesusc@uncsa.edu. General admission tickets are also available that evening for the performance only.

Scott Zigler, Dean of Drama, says American Voices presents two of the 20th Century's most influential playwrights.
鈥淭his production puts the best of modern American theater on display,鈥 says Dean of Drama Scott Zigler. 鈥淎drienne Kennedy, whose avant-garde plays are rarely performed, and the prolific Tennessee Williams are considered to be two of the most influential playwrights of the 20th Century. And we have their works together on one stage.鈥
New faculty member Cameron Knight makes his 抖阴短视频 directorial debut with American Voices leading drama students from Studio III and IV.
鈥淏oth plays explore how one copes with the trauma of loss and the journey towards claiming one鈥檚 identity,鈥 says Knight of the performance pairing. 鈥淭he two works explore grief, familial obligation, longing (to be seen, heard and believed), and more. And the language in these plays is rich with poetry and prose that paints both beautiful and horrific pictures.鈥
A lot is packed into these one-acts, but Knight believes that is part of what makes this production a good fit for 抖阴短视频鈥檚 burgeoning artists.
鈥淸The plays] offer tremendous acting and design opportunities and challenges for the students. [The one-acts] challenge the artists to put their training to good work in order to clearly tell the story in a shorter amount of time. The journey for the audience may be shortened, but the work for actors is just as in-depth and specific [as a full-length play].鈥

Associate Professor Cameron Knight directs American Voices: Two One-Act Plays, opening Oct. 18.
The first one-act is Adrienne Kennedy鈥檚 鈥A Movie Star Has to Star in Black and White.鈥
鈥淜ennedy actually has a connection to 抖阴短视频,鈥 explains Zigler. 鈥淒ean Emeritus Gerald Freedman was an early advocate of her work and directed many of her plays, including 鈥楾he Ohio State Murders鈥 and 鈥楥ities in Bezique.鈥 鈥
Kennedy鈥檚 works played a large role in the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and early 1970. Her plays, many of which are based on personal experiences, deal with the issues of racism and the idea of belonging.
鈥淎 Movie Star Has to Star in Black and White鈥 is no exception to that trend.
The play follows Clara, a young black writer, as she reflects on her troubled past and uncertain future. But Clara doesn鈥檛 get to express her personal thoughts and desires autonomously. White actresses in famous movie scenes do it for her.
The play takes place in the 50s and 60s, so Clara faces a lot of adversity as a black woman. But she keeps chasing her dreams even though all the odds are against her.
Nikyla Boxley
鈥淪he looks to famous white movie stars to help tell her story because she can鈥檛 herself due to society鈥檚 rules,鈥 says Nikyla Boxley, a senior from Detroit who plays Clara. 鈥淭he play takes place in the 50s and 60s, so Clara faces a lot of adversity as a black woman. But she keeps chasing her dreams even though all the odds are against her.鈥
鈥淚 think the audience will relate to Clara鈥檚 drive and persistence,鈥 Boxley continues. 鈥淏ut they may think Clara is throwing her life away because she is so invested in her work. Regardless, they will be emotionally moved by Clara鈥檚 journey.鈥
To prepare for the role, Boxley watched all of the movies featured in the play: 鈥淰iva Zapata,鈥 鈥淎 Place in the Sun鈥 and 鈥淣ow, Voyager.鈥
鈥淚 connected the specific scenes to see how Clara relates to the movie stars,鈥 she explains.
Because other people express Clara鈥檚 words, Boxley faces a unique challenge as an actor. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 really speak to anyone since the movie stars speak for me the majority of the time,鈥 says Boxley. 鈥淪taying attentive and active when I鈥檓 not speaking has been the hardest part for me.鈥
In 鈥Suddenly Last Summer鈥 by Tennessee Williams, the main character, Violet Venable, has no problem speaking her own mind.
Much like characters in William鈥檚 Pulitzer Prize-winning plays 鈥淎 Streetcar Named Desire鈥 and 鈥淐at on a Hot Tin Roof,鈥 Violet has a strong personality.
鈥淪he鈥檚 wicked, brilliantly smart, and deceivingly charming,鈥 says Julia Sismour about her character. 鈥淪he鈥檚 a mother in mourning, after losing her son to mysterious circumstances one year prior to the start of the play.鈥
Violet spends the one-act doing everything she can to cover up the details of her son鈥檚 death.
(Violet is) wicked, brilliantly smart, and deceivingly charming... She鈥檚 awesome, and so, so wicked.
Julia Sismour
鈥淪he鈥檚 trying to preserve his memory and legacy, even though his true character is revealed in the manner of his death,鈥 explains Sismour, a senior from Yardley, Penn. 鈥淩umors swirl around him and his moral compass, but Violet, being the woman she is, refuses to let anything tarnish his memory. Because, really, that鈥檚 all she has left.鈥
Like Boxley, Sismour has faced challenges in preparing for this role.
鈥淰iolet is southern, so she naturally speaks more slowly than I do coming from the Philadelphia-area. Her voice is low and sultry, and she makes people hang on every word she says. Taking that kind of time with the text and dropping into the reality that I control literally everything around me has been tough,鈥 she says.
Sismour is excited for audiences to meet Violet. 鈥淚 think they will think she鈥檚 wicked. Because she is. She鈥檚 awesome, and so, so wicked.鈥
In addition to Nikyla Boxley, 鈥淎 Movie Star Has to Star in Black and White鈥 features Cricket Brown as Shelley Winters; Daniel Hiro Taylor as Montgomery Clift; Dyer Rhoads as Marlon Brando; Jasper Keen as Paul Henried; Malik Childs as The Father; Nadezhda Am茅 as Jean Peters/Columbia Pictures Lady; Nom茅 SiDone as The Husband; Siena Werber as Bette Davis; and Simone Grooms as The Mother.
In 鈥淪uddenly Last Summer,鈥 Julia Sismour is joined on stage by Ainsley Seiger as Sister Felicity; Gaby Slape as Miss Foxhill; Katie Weinstein as Mrs. Holly; Maddie Milligan as Catharine Holly; Noah Crandell as Dr. Cukrowicz; and Sam Sherman as George Holly.
The design crew for the plays includes Calvin Stara, scenic design; Brendan Warner, lighting; Allyson Kochanek, wig and makeup; and Colby Hodge, sound. Olivia Dilworth designed the costumes for 鈥淎 Movie Star has to Star in Black and White,鈥 and Melina Hernandez designed the costumes for 鈥淪uddenly Last Summer.鈥 Emily Kritzman serves as production stage manager.
The scholarship honors the life and legacy of Larry Leon Hamlin, founder of the National Black Theatre Festival, and his wife, Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin.
